It’s Hard Out Here
If you didn’t know, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Each year on May 1, I’m reminded of this fact when I come across a range of brands and companies showcasing their initiatives aimed at raising awareness and support for mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness highlights that, since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been pivotal in addressing the challenges faced by millions of Americans living with mental health conditions. As a twenty-something-year-old navigating through the turbulence of early adulthood, I can attest to the challenges that come with prioritizing mental well-being in a world that often feels overwhelming.
The Pressure to Have It All:
Let's be real, society has bombarded us with expectations since the day we were born. Fast forward to our twenties, and the pressure only intensifies as we navigate adulthood. We're expected to have our careers mapped out, climb the corporate ladder, achieve financial stability for a comfortable retirement, and, for some, embark on the journey of marriage and family. The checklist seems never-ending. While these goals aren't inherently bad, it's undeniable that the constant pressure to excel in every facet of life can weigh heavily on our mental well-being. It is crucial to reassess your priorities and envision the life or success you truly desire. Continuously striving to meet external expectations may not lead to improvement. The cycle of chasing after different goals can be endless, and some achievements may never feel satisfactory. Despite societal and personal expectations, remember that you are the master of your own life. By clearly defining your aspirations and breaking free from societal pressures, you will experience a sense of relief and liberation.
Navigating Uncertainty:
Uncertainty permeates every facet of our lives and stands out as one of the things that we, as humans, fear most. The prospect of not knowing what the future holds can be daunting. Whether navigating career transitions, grappling with relationship challenges, or simply seeking clarity in our personal journeys, experiencing uncertainty is a shared human experience. Coping with the fear of the unknown while trying to maintain a sense of direction can be incredibly challenging. The most valuable lesson I've discovered regarding dealing with uncertainty is to welcome it wholeheartedly. Uncertainty is a constant in life, so why not accept and embrace it when it arises? Embracing uncertainty can often lead to unlocking the complete potential of our lives. As self-help writer Eckhart Tolle points out, “When you become comfortable with uncertainty, infinite possibilities open up in your life.”
The Myth of Constant Happiness:
At this stage of our lives, we're undoubtedly familiar with the numerous studies exploring the impact of social media on our mental well-being. Platforms like Instagram often portray a facade of unending happiness. I embrace this notion, evident in my Instagram bio, which reads, "an archive of picture-perfect moments." I'm fully aware that what I choose to share on social media, especially on a visual platform like Instagram, is a curated selection of highlights deemed "worthy" of sharing with my group of followers.
It's intriguing to reflect on how my approach to Instagram has evolved. Back in my secondary school days in England, I didn't give much thought to curating the perfect feed; I simply enjoyed sharing glimpses of my life with friends and family. While I still engage in the same practice today, it's done with a greater sense of purpose and intentionality. We’re exposed to these carefully curated photos and videos of people living their best lives, which can leave us feeling inadequate or like we’re missing out. We’ve probably heard millions of people at this point claim that “Social media is fake!” and there was even a TikTok trend to highlight the curated realities that users are sharing on social media versus what their daily lives actually look like. Remembering that not everything encountered on social media is genuine and refraining from comparing oneself to others. From a young age, I've been taught that "comparison is the thief of joy," a belief I continue to hold dear. If you find that certain individuals you follow trigger negative feelings about yourself, it's as simple as unfollowing or muting them. There's no need to cling to anything that doesn't uplift you.
The Importance of Self-Care & Seeking Support:
Self-care is crucial for everyone, but it looks different for each person. In our busy lives, self-care often takes a backseat. We prioritize productivity over our mental health, neglecting our need for rest and relaxation. However, self-care is not selfish; it's necessary for maintaining balance and preventing burnout. Regardless of whether we prefer practicing mindfulness, exercising, or spending time with loved ones, we must find activities that nourish our souls to enhance our overall well-being.
While it may seem like we are alone in our struggles, the truth is that we do not have to face our mental health challenges by ourselves. I strongly believe that everyone can benefit from therapy, or at least give it a chance. Whether it's confiding in a trusted friend, seeking professional help, or joining a support group, reaching out for assistance demonstrates courage, not weakness. Opening up about our struggles can be daunting, but it's often the first step towards healing and recovery.
Navigating your mental health amidst everything else can be incredibly challenging, but it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Even if it sounds cliché, it's okay not to be okay. By recognizing and acknowledging the struggles we face and seeking help when necessary, we can strive for a brighter and mentally healthier future for ourselves and our community. Let's keep speaking up, challenging stigma, and standing by each other as we progress towards mental well-being. Remember, it's hard out here, but together, we can overcome the obstacles and thrive.
